All but abandoned by her family in a London retirement hotel, an elderly woman strikes up a curious friendship with a young writer.
When widow Sarah Palfrey (Joan Plowright) meets young writer Ludovic Meyer (Rupert Friend) he becomes her surrogate grandson. She wants to retain some independence, living in a genteel, small London hotel, and he is seeking life experience and inspiration for his creativity. But their relationship is not without complications…
What the critics said…
“‘Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont’ is a juicy morsel for the great British actress Dame Joan Plowright, who endows Mrs. Palfrey with stoic charm and decency.”
The NY Times
“‘Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont’ is an endearing, deceptively simple story (the film) excels at presenting a relationship unfurling with comedic undertones that will appeal to older audiences, art house patrons, and Joan Plowright fans.”
Variety
“As in a fine miniature painting, director Dan Ireland and screenwriter Ruth Sacks work in small brushstrokes in ‘Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont.’ The details are what matters, and thanks to a cast of all-star British elders and a mischievous sense of humor, the filmmakers bring those details to vivid life.”
